Do you have any further information?I know nothing of his birthdate or death date.I have an obituary on fabric and it states:" James Dickey. On Sunday morning last the subject of this sketch passed quietly away to the other world. Mr Dickey has been prominently connected with the natural gas production and its use in this place. He moved here about 1860,or during the "oil excitement," having had considerable experience in boring wells for salt water at other points. He contracted with Salt & Mear, and Leonard Pickle, to put down an oil well at Jethro, near Pickle's old saw mill. Mr. Dickey moved his family to the two-story frame dwelling adjoining, and it was there that he first put to use the large supply of natural gas that he found at a depth of about six hundred feet, along with a big vein of salt water, but no oil. Mr. Dickey conducted the gas to his residence in pipes, and used it in his grates and stoves, as well as for lights. The gas from this well was afterwards used for another purpose. Salt pans were put up, and the gas was used to boil the water. We believe Mr. Dickey had charge of these salt works for some time. At various times since he has put down gas wells, both here and elsewhere. In fact, for a number of years he made it his sole business, which he thoroughly understood. Of late years, however, he has been working at his trade as a stonemason, and it was while at work in the quarry that he strained himself, and received injuries which culminated in his death. He was seventy-four years old, and had enjoyed heretofore reasonably good health, having been ill only about ten days. His funeral took place Monday from his residence in the West End, and his remains were followed to the old cemetary by his many friends. The religious services were conducted by Rev. Westfall. Mr. Dickey leaves a wife and four children- Rodney Dickey, Geo. Dickey, Mrs. John Baum, Jr., and Mrs. John M. Orr, all residing in this place."
My greatgrandmother was Mrs. John M. Orr(Mary Elizabeth Dickey b.1852)born in Saltzburg Pa.
I have here mother listed in the family bible as Catherine Ryan b.May 5, 1814 in Pa.and died in May, 1901 in East Liverpool. I also have another fabric obituary of a Miss Rosie Dickey, d. July 7, 1890 at 5:30 a.m age 23yrs.
I know nothing more. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Nancy West...Mantua, N.J.
