Moses Dickey, well-known miller and millwright of Chester and Lancaster Co's, PA, has been well-researched only in the last several years. Before then a lot of errors were in circulation. We now know that his parents were William and Esther Dickey who were in Sadsbury Twp, Chester Co, PA by 1724. Moses's first wife, Margaret, and some of his children died in a house fire in January 1759. His second wife was Agnes (?Wilson). Daughter Sarah Dickey was married to Dr John Cantzon August 1, 1761 by the Rev John Caspar Stoever at Paxtang township, PA. Moses's probate record exists in a typed transcription which has: "The share of John Canson's wife Sarah agreeable to the will 0.5.0" Sarah and her husband moved to SC. In 1765 they named a son Moses after her father. In addition to an uncertain number who died in the fire of 7 Jan 1759, it is believed that Moses was the father of these: Catherine, married 1761 John Foster; she 1738--1804 Sarah, married (Dr.) John Cantzon, to SC Agnes, married 1765 Robert Dickey (cousin?) William, married 1772 Mary McConnell. (Father of Esther, Thomas, Robert, Dorcas, Sarah, John) John, not 18 in 1765; married Ann _____. Perhaps m2: Jane Potts 1778; d 1779 Rowan Co, NC (Father of Sarah and Rebecca) Mary (possibly); she died 6 Apr 1764 Moses Ca 1764, married 1791 Jane Shaw. To Columbiana Co, OH in 1812. (Father of Hamilton, Wilson Smith, George, Susan, Moses, Robert, William, James, Jonathan, Phianna.) George Ca 1766 (between Moses's will and death). Unfortunately someone seems to have read "Canson" as Carson in Moses's probate file. I'm not sure where the John Linn Carson story comes from. This was submitted to the LDS(Mormon) database. Children were said to have been John Carson (ca 1758), George Carson (ca 1760), Richard Carson, and Jane Carson (ca 1764). There was, in fact, a well-to-do merchant named John Carson whose land adjoined Moses Dickey's patent. John Carson could not have been born later than about 1721, and probably much earlier, for in 1749 he paid the highest taxes in Paxtang township. Several years ago I read some correspondence to the Lancaster Co PA Historical Society from a researcher in Jonesboro, AR who made a case against the Carson connection. I don't think I copied it, but it made sense at the time. Further research may refine or alter this list. As I said, serious Dickey research is relatively recent. New ways of looking at the data may be found. Genealogies are always subject to revision. But this is what is currently circulating.
