ADA DICKEY BLOCK, 87, died at home on Saturday, September 8th. Mrs. Block was born September 21, 1913, in Uvalde, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Martel Block, to whom she was married for 47 years, and by her sister Mary Henrietta Dickey. She was the great-granddaugter of Catherine Le Gette, who came to Texas in 1856 and for whom the home "Sebastopol" in Sequin was built. This home is now the site of a state park. Mrs. Block was the daughter of Ada Woodley McDaniel and Cornelius William Dickey. While living in Uvalde, she attended boarding school at Incarnate Word Academy in San Antonio. During her high school years, she moved to Houston and attended San Jacinto High School, graduating in 1931. She also attended the University of Houston. In 1942 she married Charles Martel Block in New York City, and they lived in Columbus, Ohio, briefly during World War II, eventually returning to Houston after the war. In 1951 the Blocks built a home in the then remote Memorial Drive area, and she resided in this home she so dearly loved until her death. Mrs. Block was a 50 year member of St. Francis Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and was instrumental in the altar cushion needlepoint project. She was a Life Member of Memorial Drive Garden Club, serving on its board and always treasuring her friendships within that club. Her other affiliations included the Daughters of the American Revolution, Martha Washington Chapter, The Seguin Conservation Society, and the Houston Club. She is survived by her four children: Mary Block Smith and husband Harry of Austin, TX; Elaine W. Block and Joseph L. Block of Houston; Donald M. Block and wife Jennifer of Los Angeles, CA.; 6 grandchildren: Edward H. Block and wife Allison, David N. Hanna and Matthew C. Smith, all of Austin; Michael J. Hanna of Chicago; Lily and Lena Block of Los Angeles; 2 great-grandchildren: Charles O. (Chase) Block and Edison A. Block of Austin. She is also survived by brother-in-law Edward Martel Block and wife Shirley of Key West, FL, and nephews Mark, Steve, and Stuart Block, their wives and families. Mrs. Block will be remembered for her gracious and loving nature and for her devotion to family and friends. The family wishes to express its gratitude to caregivers Lula Faye Crawford, Ernesteen Miller, Dorthy Petersen, Stella Scott, and Lily Yett for the kindness and special care given to Mrs. Block during her long illness. Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6 to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, September 11th at J.B. Earthman Tanglewood, 5740 San Felipe. A memorial service will be conducted at one o'clock on Wednesday, September 12th, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point Road, interment to follow at Forest Park Lawndale, Garden of Gethsemani. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. For those desiring, memorials may be given to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point Road, Houston TX 77024, The Alzheimer's Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston, TX 77092, or to a charity of your choice.
