I have just done some DICKEY genealogy research. I began this way:
If you know where your granparents were born, try sending for their birth certificates through vital statistics in that state. Addresses and fees can be found on the net. You could also send for your grandfather's death certificate. Find his date of death (sometimes only the month) by checking the Social Security Death Index on the net. Then send to vital statistics. This should get you started.
