Dotty; We may be talking about 2 different DNA tests. If you did some upgrades, that would be for the Y-DNA test (upgrading to 37 or 67 markers?). This test only tracks the male line with a particular surname - in this case DICKERSON. Upgrading will not result in any additional matches, in fact fewer people will match your upgrades, simply because fewer people have done upgrades, so there are fewer people to compare with. The Family Finder costs very little more than the Y-67 test; but then it looks at over 500,000 places across all of your DNA (you get half your DNA from Mom; half from Dad; you get about 1/4 from each grandparent; 1/8 from each great grand parent, etc). With this test FTDNA has powerful computers that compare your DNA results with everyone else in their data base who took this test, and reports to you the name and email of everyone who is probably your cousin. So far I've confirmed 15 such cousins from my 106 matches; the 15 common ancestors are ancestors of 6 of my 8 great grandparents. So it's pretty much covering my tree; and I get about one new match a week, as more folks take this test. My line back to DICKERSON ancestors is not along all-male or all-female lines. That's why I'm hoping folks with my DICKERSON ancestry will take the Family Finder test, which traces through males and females - so we can see if we match. If you did sign up for the Family Finder DNA test and are having trouble navigating the pages (it is a little confusing at first), please email me off line and I'll send you some Tips and Tricks I've made up for this test, and I'll send you a copy of my ancestor list that's designed to get a better response from your matches.
