In 1840 there were only two Dickersons in Lawrence, In. One was George and the other was William. George was a little young to be the father but William was between 40-50. William also had sons between 15 and 20 so I think he might be the father. Also his wife was between 40-50.

Since Merit was born in 1826 I figured they were in Ky in 1820. I found a William Dickerson under 25 in
1820 United States Federal Census > Kentucky > Campbell > Covington
Living next to a Samuel Dickerson close to the same age. Probably a brother.
William Dickerson 2 sons to age 10,1 male 16-26,2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26. He was apparently engaged in agriculture.
