John Dickerson was born in Virginia and moved to Granville County, North Carolina where Lord Granville had granted him large areas of land. He was among the signers of the petition to form the County of Granville. In the spring of 1776, the North Carolina Congress raised three Companies of Light Calvary. John was appointed Captain of the 1st Company. By August of 1883 he held the title of Colonel, He married Elizabeth Peace and in 1850 he gave some of the grant land to his daughter, Elizabeth who had married Shugar/Shugan Fortner. Some of the land he sold, but the remainder was deeded to his nephews, John Peace and William Harmon Peace, but he kept the use of the land until his death. His wife had preceded him in death. The deed was executed in court after his death in 1802.
