obit: Garland Dickerson--Weekly Standard Newspaper, Raleigh, NC--Jun 08, 1859
At his residence in Rutherford county, on the 23d. ult., Garland Dickerson, age 82 years one month and twenty-one days.
The deceased was born in the county of Caswell, and a short time previous to the year 1800 he removed to Tennessee, then a territory. He did not remain there long, but returned to his native State, in the company with Vardry McBee, a well know citizen of Greenville, S. C. He settled in Lincolntown, but did not remain there long, when he removed to Rutherford, where he lived till the day of this death.
In the death of Mr. Dickerson this county has sustained the loss of one of its best and most upright citizens. Remarkable for his social qualities, and an amiability of disposition that never permitted him to speak unkindly of any one, it may truly be said that he died without an enemy. Though an unambitious man, never having aspired to any high position in life, his name will never be forgotten in the county of his residence.
He was buried with Masonic honors in the village of Rutherfordton, and the large concourse of citizens, both old and young, who attended his funeral, will attest the respect in which he was held in the community where he had lived for more the fity years.
