Mary, I am a descendant of the Dicken clan of Culpepper Co., VA, too. There was a family history published in the 1960s. I sent my copy to the Allen Co., Indiana genealogy library in Ft. Wayne a few years ago. Perhaps you can obtain help in accessing information from the book. Most of the family settled in Vermillion Co., Grant Co., Fountain, Ind. It appears that Joel was in Indiana for the 1820 census. Good Luck. I hope this helps a little.
