I am a direct descendent of Richard M. Dicken and Jane Kirkham. This couple was married in Kentucky July 8, 1827. They are buried in the old Thomas Cemetary East 11 near Newport, Indiana. I have visited there and have taken pictures of family tombstones I would be happy to share. Richard' parents were Joel Dicken and Sarah (Cloud) Dicken. They are also buried in old Thomas Cemetary. In adddition to Richard M. Joel and Sarah had the following children:Simeon, James, John, Joel, William, Benjamin K., Daniel C, Avaline and Jane Amanda. Sarah's parents were most likely William and Jane Cloud. The following information was taken from a history of Newport and Vermillion Township by Harold L. O'Donnell: Writing of Joel Dicken, "This is one of the very first families to settle in Vermillion Township, coming here in 1821 from Prairie Creek, Kentucky. Serveral of their children were born in Kentucky before coming here. Joel's son, Simeon was married in 1822 to Martha (Patsy) Elliott, a daughter of Robert Elliott and a sister to Mrs. Benjamin Shaw. Note that the date was 1822 which was two years before Vermillion County was formed, therefore, the marriage was reconded in Vigo County of which this county was then a part. The Dickens, Elliott and Shaw families were apparently very close as many of their children had the same names. Joel entered land in Section 17, T 17N R ( W which was at that time part of Vermillion Township but which in 1856 was part of a mile wide strip running east and west which was given to Eugne Township. Also Joel and son Simeon entered land in Section 8 alongside Section 17, but which was in Eugene Twonship. Shaws and Elliotts were adjoining. Richard Dicken entered land in Section 28 just west of Newport." I have an interesting map of early land owners in Vermillion county that locates these sections and have visited the land that once was owned by Richard Dicken. It is located adjacent to the old Thomas cemetary after crossing an historic wooden covered bridge from Newport, Indiana. It is interesting that Richard's wife, Jane was born May 6, 1806 and died in 1906. The offspring of this couple are: John-1828, Abigal-1832, Joseph-1834, Julia-1836, William-1838, Richard B-1841 and Amanda-1843. My direct ancestor is Richard B. who married Mary Thompson September 7, 1869. This couple is buried in a small country cemetary in Bono, Indiana in the same well-kept cemetary as the parents of war correspondant Ernie Pyle. They had three children: Carrie, Clara (Cory) and my grandfather, Addison Nigel born August 18, 1886. Addison died as a young father in a flu epidemic April 13, 1914. His wife was Martha May. She gave him two children. Mary Kathryn and Ralph Vernon, my father. My father was only an infant at the time of Addison's death so did not know his father or the rich heritage of the Dicken family in Indiana before his own death in 1983. My parents met during World War II when my father was stationed in Kansas. He married my mother, Genevieve Harris when he returned from the European front. They had five children: Richard, Susan, Patricia, Eddy and Peggy (the twins!) My older brother Richard had no children, my brother Ed has one son, Joshua. There are six other member's of Joshua's generation. I do not include information about my other neices and nephews simple because I believe it is the historical data that researchers find more interesting. I hope this information about one branch of the Richard Dicken family tree is useful to you in your research.
