Hi there,
I've been trying to find the family of Margaret DICK, who was born in Scotland, and married and died in New Zealand.
I believe that Margaret was the daughter of Thomas DICK and Christian NISBET, born 1834 in Edinburgh. The family of Thomas and Christian as I've found (corrections welcome!) are as follows:
Thomas DICK, b. abt 1800 in Ayr/Fife/Midlothian???
m. Christian NISBET, b. abt 1793 in Edinburgh
The first four children I found in the 1841 census.
1) William DICK, b. abt 1827
2) Janet/Jessie DICK, b. abt 1829
3) Margaret DICK, b. abt 1834
4) James DICK, b. abt 1837
I also found a Robert Nisbet DICK, b. abt 1831 on the IGI.
Looking for Christian and Thomas in the 1871 census, I found a couple I believe to be them in Fife, in a household with two grandchildren. After looking on the IGI these two children belonged to a Christian DICK who had married William MILL. However I can find no birth of a Christian DICK to Thomas.
Also, in the 1871 census, both Thomas and Christian are given as being born in Fife, when I'm almost positive Christian was born in Edinburgh. The other thing that makes me cautious about the 1871 census is that Thomas is given as a carter, when every other source has him as a tailor.
Janet/Jessie DICK married John MCFARLANE, and their family appears in the 1881 census. Thomas DICK is in their household at this time. (I'm not sure when he died, but Christian NISBET/DICK died in 1873.)
Christian DICK/MILL appears in the 1881 census also (as Christina MILL), as a widow. I've not checked the 1871 census yet, and am in no rush as I would really like to be able to check I'm chasing the right person first. How can I find out if Christian MILL is the daughter of Thomas DICK? I can't find a death certificate for her at all.
Margaret DICK married Robert MITCHELL in 1861 in New Zealand, and died soon after her first child was born. I can not find her death, but Christian Nisbet MITCHELL was born in 1862, and was adopted about 1864 by the GOURLAY family, so the death must have happened in this time period.
