Esther- Family Name History
DIBBLE
Family names are infinitely more varied then personal names, having been culled from more diverse sources, having undergone more changes of form, and having come from many more different languages.Of surnames in Germany,it has been said that family names did not come into general emply until late in the Middle ages. First of all,the nobility in the twelfth century called themselves after ancestral seats.Such surnames were usually prefixed by "Von". Then, amoung the citizens they were adoped in the fourtheenth century, but did not become general until the sixteenth century.
The sure name Dibble, and its variants Dibble,Dibl,Dipple,Diepel and Chibble,is of patronymic origin, that is. it belongs to the category of surnames derived from the first name of the father of the initial bearer. In this instance, the name indicates "son of Dibble",a pet form of Dibbald,an ancient form of Cheobald. The personal name Dibbald or Cheobald is derived from Gotic "thiuda",in old High German "diot, diet",meaning "people",and "bald", meaning "bold, aundacious".
In German the letters "d" and "t" and "b" and "P" are interchangeable.
The earliest recored of this surname or a variant dates back to the fifteenth century when one Conz Dippel was recored in Zwehren near Kassel in 1490.In 1575 one Herman Diepel was a golgsmith in Hesse Germany.
