WANTED: Portuguese Dias descendants whose families live or once lived in Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Are you descended from Revolutionary soldier Joseph Dias of the Azores (Western Islands) and his wife Sarah Manter of Tisbury? How about Manuel Francis Dias of Nantucket, or Manuel J. Dias (b. 1880) of Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, and Martha's Vineyard? Or Matthew Joseph Dias of Fayal (son of Jose F. Dias and Rosa Isabelle Rodrigues) of Tisbury? The Portuguese Genealogy Committee, the small group of Martha's Vineyard residents who in 1996 published "Our Portuguese Heritage: An Informal Genealogy of 3,000 Families on Martha's Vineyard," together with the book's author, Marianne Holmes Thomas of Edgartown, will begin work this winter on a second, and final edition of the genealogy that will bring family records up to the close of the millennium and include corrections and additions to the first edition. The committee also plans to incorporate brief family histories and an expanded narrative history of the Vineyard's Portuguese community as a whole. Members of the committee are eager to begin the task of collecting information and corrections and would very much appreciate your help. The committee members are: Marianne Thomas, 508-627-4060 or c/o time@gis.net; Jean Andrews, azoresgirl@yahoo.com; Chris Baer, cbaer@vineyard.net; Elaine Carroll, ecc@mvgiftbaskets.com; Bill Elbow and Ann Allen, 508-627-9428 or time@gis.net; Tommy Fisher, 508-627-4656 (w), 508-627-5929 (h), and Claudia Metell, 508-693-1428 (h).
