Doyle to Dial myth or truth?

Hi-
I have often heard a story in my family that our family name was previously 'D'oyle'--hundreds of years ago. The story says that one of my ancestors, a D'oyle, was some kind of horse theif and when the police started hunting for him he moved to a different town and started his new life with the name 'Dial'; and that is why I am Erika Dial instead of Erika D'oyle. Does anybody know if this is simply a myth passed along to me or is there some semblance of truth to this story? Any reply much appreciated.
