Do you have the copies of the letters written by Peyton Lewis to Mrs. Freeland? At one point, I transcribed them for another cousin and would be willing to sent them to you if you would like. I think I put them in MS Word format.

I am interested in the article you mentioned. Would it be possible to get a copy of it? I can send you the cost of copies and postage.

I have been researching the life of Peyton Lewis for a couple of years. As you can imagine, this has been no easy task!

I do know the following things: He was a minister in the AME Church since 1878 starting out in the Norfolk area. His last church was the Payne Memorial Church in Waterloo, Iowa. According to the 1920 Census of Woodbury County, Iowa, Peyton was living with his wife Emma and daughters Nettie and Lottie and son Walton. The children were all born in Florida and Petyon's wife was born in Georgia. This must be his second wife.

I just found yesterday information on Peyton's death in BlackHawk County, Iowa that shows his death date as 12/25/1934 of Bronchial pneumonia. There is a Nettie Lucy Adams Lewis (died 8-19-1925 of Pulmonary TB) and a Lottie Adams Lewis (died 4-29-1929 of TB) listed also. Maybe Nettie and Lottie were really Peyton's step children with the last name Adams?

I will look to see what I can find on the name Banks. Maybe your grandfather was a cousin to the Lewis family? I will see what I can find among my Deyerle (and other family)information.

Angela
