Greetings! The Dey Genealogical Chart is now available to view at the Bentley Historical Library on the North Campus of the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. After the death in 2008 of a relative who was a Dey, the daughter of Harry William and Irma (Mock) Dey who resided in Springport Township, Jackson County, MI, I received some tightly-rolled papers about 2 inches in diameter and 21 inches long. I don't know how long they were rolled, but the blueprint paper was fragile, and small pieces fell off when it was touched. Not knowing what it contained, my husband and I paid a paper conservator to rehydrate the pages and flatten them. When we first saw these 'pages', they actually were a chart that had been folded before rolling, and the fold weakened and in time created two pages instead of the original one large page. The chart's names and dates are written in cursive on the blue paper with white ink. There is no mention of when it was completed, or by whom it was created. Family members who were consulted believe Harry William Dey and his father Merton Lawrence Dey probably created the chart, perhaps with the help of Harry’s uncles. The complete Dey Chart measures approximately 42 inches by 52 inches, and covers family members beginning with John I. Dey (1772-28 Apr 1834) and wife Catherine Anne Dey (1776-21 Aug 1864) and their children of South Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ who migrated to and arrived at Birdsall, Allegany County, New York on 5 May, 1823. The dates for people on the chart cover from c1772 – c1890. There are at least four major branches of this Dey family drawn on the chart; the fourth branch may cover one half of the chart. Those branches are headed by: 1) Lawrence J. Dey/Margaret Grigg Ross, 2) Mary Cheeseman Dey/Consider Wilcox, 3) Margaret Perrine Dey/Randolph Truman, - these three in the Lower half of the Chart - and 4) James Dey/Mary P. Pennie or Perrine - in the Upper half of the Chart. We decided to donate the Dey Genealogical Chart to the Bentley Historical Library, connected to the University of Michigan and located in Ann Arbor, MI, where it will be most accessible to all descendants of John I. & Catherine Ann Dey. Conservators have joined the two sections again, and made repairs. The Chart is very easy to read in person. The library is on the northeast side of Ann Arbor, and accessed from the Plymouth Road exit of US 23, and is not far from that exit. There will be no need to call ahead for a reservation to see it; one can enter during their regular hours, and ask to see it. This makes it available to all Dey family members, and protected in a climate-controlled atmosphere so it can last as long as possible! I will put this information on all applicable Rootsweb Maillists and Message Boards for DEY and NJ and NY counties, and on the GenForum "Dey" Board. I cannot be sure whether the information on the Chart is entirely correct, but your continuing research will soon answer that question. My best wishes to you! Patricia Sanford Brown To locate the Dey Chart, please type: “//bentley.umich.edu”, then put “Dey” (no quotes in either case!) in the search box at upper right. Library Hours and driving directions to the Library also are available on that website. Notify Administrator about this message?
