The Dey Family fled France to Holland. They had a grist mill on the Island of Texil. Col Theunis Dey was charged, by Washington, with the safety of Bergen County (which at that time encompassed what is now Pasaic County). Dey hosted Washington and 150 of his troops after Valley Forge.

The Dey family is also related to the author Albert Payson Terhune, which is my connection. I had the pleasure of knowing my cousin Raymond Dey (10 direct generations from Theunis) for many years. At one time he was the Curator of Dey Mansion, now part of the Passaic County Park Commission.
