I have a Luen Dexter who lived in Windsor Co., VT from at least 1798 to 1814. He then moved to Henderson, Jefferson Co., NY. Jefferson Co. is right next to St. Lawrence Co., so I suspect there is a tie-in with your Solon Fordyce Dexter.
Also, I have the index for the 1850 NY Census and there is a SOLON DEXTER listed in Canton, St. Lawrence Co. on page 310. So the S.F. Dexter that you found in Canton in 1860 is *probably* Solon.
