Greeting all... My 3rd maternal grand-uncle, Dr. José Abelardo Lugo-Vińa y Mercado, married Grace Giddings De Wolf, 1/6/1883 at Bristol, RI. Grace was the daughter of Algernon Sydney De Wolf and Clara A. Diman. After serving in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War as a contract surgeon with the U.S. Army, uncle José was commissioned as a Captain/Assistant Surgeon in the Porto Rico Regiment, U.S. Volunteer Infantry in March 1900. He was the first Puertorican born doctor to receive such a commission. He was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on 4/8/1857, the son of Royal Military Hospital Inspector (Ret.) Nicasio Lugo-Vińa y Oliver (b. Canary Islands), and Francisca Antonia Mercado y Vizcarrondo (b. Trujillo Bajo, Puerto Rico). I'm sharing this information for two reasons, first: I've seen some on-line genealogical information stating that José was from Mexico (wrong); and second: I'm hoping that someone out there may have a picture of both José and Grace in their possession and can provide me with a copy (I will gladly pay any expense). They didn't have any descendants and I'm about the only member of my family who has been working on our genealogy. Nevertheless, I'm happy to have this connection with the De Wolf family and hope to share any information I find with all of you. God Bless...
