BUTLER, Ga., July 30.--A gloom, scarcely to be dispelled, was cast over every heart in this community when it was learned that "Uncle" Martin Chapman was dead.Butler has lost one of its grandest men, the sire of all the Chapmans, one of the most influential families in this county.Martin DeWitt Chapman would have been 83 years old had he lived another month, and in these long years he has made many stars for his crown, his life was an inspiration to every one.
A pioneer citizen, and a faithful husband and father, and a consistent member of the Baptist church.Uncle Martin was first married to Miss Mary Meadows, of Newnan. She has long since died.He is survived by his present wife, who was Miss Callie Rogers of Butler, also by his three sons of the first marriage, M. T., A. D., and D. P. Chapman, six grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
