You have stepped on an interesting point in time and family.
There were many references to Dewitts in early Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana who came from New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, or South Carolina.
Unfortunately, records are scattered or lost and the Dewitts seemed to love using the same names. So there were many Peters, Johns, Williams, and so on; and many of them married women with common names - notably Sarah or Elizabeth.Sorting it out is difficult.
My great grandfather several generations back, William Dewitt, the son of Peter and Sarah Dewitt, married a widow named Elizabeth Conner in Campbell County, Kentucky in 1804, moved to southern Indiana, and had a daughter named Maria. So he sounds like a possible relative to your Maria.
I have compiled considerable research on early Ohio Valley Dewitts - contact me via email to share info.
