My husband's father told him they were related to Actor Tom Mix, but they didn't know how, yet I found NO relation to him.
Back then if a person had the same last name and in my husband's family they had an ancestor last name Mix, it was assumed and passed down that they were related. There was a lot of literary fraud in the 1800's in families both published in books by wealthier people and unpublished, passed down by word of mouth. This was used to puff up their image and make the family look better, so that they could get better educations, and jobs. People were born out of wedlock, adopted etc. so DNA tests are not 100% reliable either.
