Tjerck’s father was Nicholas de Witt who immigrated with Hendrick Hudson on the ship “Half Moon” in 1609. It’s been said he was the ship’s doctor. Back then the Barber was also the Doctor. The de Witt’s were Lutheran.
Tjerck brought his servants (negro slaves ?)to Kingston, New York. He built and owned 2 sloops which sailed the Hudson and Atlantic coasts. One of the sloops was the Ye St. Barbara, 50 feet. The sloop was sold to Daniel Hobart of Barbados Island for commercial use. Tjerck’s home still stands on Hurley Avenue in Kingston, New York. Tjerck and his wife Barbara Andriessen had 13 children. In a letter written Jan 16, 1890 by George de Witt of the law firm in New York, de Witt, Lockman, de Witt, he wrote that the de Wittes from Belgium or Antwerp came from Spain. Candidus is Spanish for white. Witt is Dutch for white. No mention of whether our Dordrecht de Witt’s came from Spain.
Tjerck’s sister was Emmertine Claessen de Witt, 1632-1682 married to
Martinus Hermansz Hoffman. Their son was
Martinus Hoffman (1706/07-1772) m. Tryntje Benson (1712-1765)
Cornelia Hoffman (1734-1789) m Isaac Roosevelt (1726-1794)
James Roosevelt (1760-1847) m. Maria Biza Walton (1759-1810)
Isaac Roosevelt, M.D. (1790-1863) m. Mary Rebecca Aspinwall (1809-1886)
James Roosevelt (1828-1900) m. Sara Delano --
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States.
de Witt Clinton also descends from them:
Mary (Polly) de Witt (b. 1737), (daughter of Egbert DeWitt/Granddaughter of Andries de Witt/Grand Granddaughter of Tjerck Claesen de Witt) was the mother of DeWitt Clinton b.1769 d.1828.
de Witt Clinton was nephew of George Clinton who was elected in 1777 as 1st Governor of New York State. de Witt Clinton was also instrumental in Building the Erie Canal in Upstate New York. Dewitt Clinton served many Government Posts (State & Federal). He was Mayor of New York City 1803-1815, and he was elected Governor of New York 2 times, 1817-1822 & 1825-1828.
Also of interest is Tjerck’s son Jan de Witt married Wyntje Kierstede. Both of Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Wyntje’s parents were Roelof Kierstede and Eyke Aelbert Roosa. Eyke’s parents were Albert Heymans Roosa and Wuntje de Jongh. Roosa’s were crypto Jews originally from Spain.
I share the same ancestors of Tjerck. Kornelis de Witt 1485-1537 and Beatrix Singeland. They were two of my 15th great grandparents. They were also Tjerk’s 3rd great grandparents, then the line changes. I descend from Kornelis son Pieter, one of my 14th great grandfathers, and Tjerck descends from Kornelis son Frans. Pieter’s daughter was Petronella Pietersz de Witt who married Jacob Adriaans Cool 1665-1728, two of my 13th great grandparents. Frans son Cornelis married Johanna Heymans. Cornelis and Johanna’s son Jacob was the father of the two famous de Witt brothers who were executed by Orangeists Calvinists. Cornelis de Witt and Johanna Heymans were Tjerck’s great grandparents. Cornelis son Andries was Tjerck’s grandfather. Andries son Nicholas was Tjerck’s father.
Tjerck’s son Jan de Witt married Wyntje Kierstede. Their 2 daughters Janettje and Rachel de Witt married 2 brothers, Abraham and Isaak Van Aken. Abraham and Isaak were the brother of Neeltje Van Aken who married first husband Jan Emans, my 7th great grandparents.
Tjercks daughter Marretje de Witt married Hendrick Hendricksen Kortreght
Tjercks daughter Aefje (Eva) married Jan Pawling, son of Henry Pawling and Henry Roosa. The Kortrecht’s and Roosa’s are documented by their descendants to have descended from Sephardic Jews from Spain.
Johanna Heymans marriedCornelis de Witt. Heymans may have come from the word Heym or Haym. Chaim is a Hebrew word for life.
Going back further, Maria Boem married to Witt de Witt, were two of my 16th great grandparents.
The name Boem, Bohm, Boehm descends from the tride Boii or Baii from N. Italy. They were Celtic people in the 1st century A.D. and displaced by Slavic. The name means inhabitants of Bohemia, part of the Czech Republic. Boehm means Baii + Leim = homeland. Bohm is a Dutch Jewish Ashkenazi name. I found a list of Sephardic Jewish names and among the names is Witt, although I found no documents of our Dordrecht de Witt’s being Jewish.
