As I understand it, the name was Alsatian or Palantine in origin with the De being the French part and the Wald, the German. Americanized,the W was pronounced V and became Vault, Valt,Walt etc. Same for the De in that the French gave way to the Americanized The.My own family's became Da Vault sometime in the mid 18th century.
