I also a Descendant of Joseph Hutton Defrees and Mary Start. I have found a William C. Defrees Born Nov 11 1865 in Elkhart Co. In. His Fathers was Tjeerd Stoffels De Vries b Holland It also had (Jared Defrees) and the Mother was Jacobje Visser (Josephine Fisher)born in Friesland Netherlands. They were married in Friesland then moved to the US. I later found a Henry J. Defrees born Sept 9 1861 in Elkhart Co. In. with the same parents. It was common for the V to be changed to an F Not only with the DeVries Other last names ie Visser - Fisher.
