'De Vries' is a pure Dutch name. It means person from Friesland (Dutch provincie). Or better 'The Frisian'. Note that the province name is spelled with an F and not a V. Around 1800 however also the province name was written as Vriesland.

In Dutch language this name is pronounced as

The Frees. (=The Frisian) (De Vries)

The name De Frees (pronounced as The Phrase) is not known to me in Holland and Belgium. So it is very likely that the American name Defreese is a mis-spelling of the Dutch name De Vries.

Peter

p.s. Somebody wrote about the name Devorss. Another common Dutch name is De Vos, which means The Fox. Maybe these two names are related??
