I am trying to sort out several persons of the name Lucy Devotion to determine if they are one and the same, and how they are connected to Ebenezer Devotion.
1. According to the LDS Ancestral File, Lucy Devotion, born circa 1750 (of Bennington, VT)married circa 1771 to Levi West, born circa 1746 (of Bennington, VT), and they were the parents of Lucy West (1772-1809) who married Nathaniel Montague.
2. The Descendants of Andrew Ford of Weymouth, MA, shows Amariah Preston, b. 7 Feb 1738/9 m. as his fourth wife Lucy (Devotion) West. The marriage records of Northbridge, Worcester County, MA, show Amariah Preston and "Lucy West" married 8 May 1808. Other records show that Amariah died 27 Feb 1834 (Roxbury, Delaware, NY).
3. Dr. Joseph Baker and Lucy Devotion were married 10 January 1779 (Scotland, Windham, CT). This Lucy Devotion is supposed to have been born 12 February 1754 (Windham, CT) to Ebenezer and Martha Devotion, and died 1842, 38 years after Joseph Baker died in 1804.
So perhaps Lucy Devotion, dau of Ebenezer and Martha Devotion was first married to Levi West circa 1771, by whom she had daughter Lucy West, then married Dr. Joseph Baker in 1779 (CT). Two things that don't make sense on that though is that the Levi West/Lucy Devotion were apparently from VT, while Joseph Baker/Lucy Devotion were from Windham County, CT. Also, why would the marriage record list her by her maiden name if she was previously married.
I suppose it could further be argued that the same Lucy (Devotion) West Baker married in 1808 in Worcester, MA to Amariah Preston, but again why would the marriage be listed under "West" instead of "Baker" and then there's that nagging thing about the location (MA vs CT vs VT).
Has anybody else tried to straighten this out?
