I just found the 1913 obituary of my great great grandfathers oldest son James M Smith b. 21 Aug 1836. The obit says that he was born in New York at the Devoe Homestead near the Bloomingdale Asylum. The Asylum was located in Morningside Heights on a lot which extended from what is now 116th St to 120th St between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave. The land is now part of Columbia University. His parents were Stephen B Smith b. abt 1808 - 1810 and Mary E b. abt 1818. I don't know Mary's maiden name. Were there any Mary Devoes born in New York around 1818? Thanks for any help Notify Administrator about this message?
