Patrick Devlin &Ellen Donnelly, c.1850
Posted by: Pat Devlin Date: April 11, 2001 at 18:14:45
  of 1442

Here’s the recent part of a family tree; I’m interested in any information about Patrick Devlin’s and Ellen Donnelly’s forebears.

Patrick Devlin of Dungannon, Co. Tyrone moved to Tassagh Bridge, Co.Armagh where he married Ellen Donnelly, sometime before 1869.

One of their sons was Peter John Devlin (1869-1924) , who ran away to Scotland at age 14 and worked in the steel mills. He married Ellen McArdle (1876-1918), at Coatsbridge, Lanarkshire. Ellen was the daughter of one Elizabeth Gorman (?) and Michael McArdle, of Dundrum, Co. Armagh., the McArdle family having also moved from Ireland to Scotland. (Some of her brothers later moved to Lowell, Massachusetts.)

Peter and Ellen Devlin had 8 children: Patrick (1900), Elizabeth (1901), Helen (1903), John (1904), James(1907), Joseph (1909), Francis (1911) and Thomas (1914).

Patrick moved to Canada after having been a Garda in Ireland..
John bounced between UK and US, retired in Florida.
James lived in Glasgow, Joseph in Manchester
Frank joined the British Navy to keep Thomas in school, but the “wicked” step-mother dumped Thomas on sister Lizzie (Elizabeth). In 1930, Thomas joined his brother Patrick in Niagara Falls, Canada.
Helen never married, known as Nellie.
Elizabeth married Neil O’Neil in Tassagh; their sons went to California
