Well that naming pattern fits at least at some level--my g-g-g grandfather William Devlin's eldest son was Robert Beatty Devlin, after William's mother Ann Beatty (wife of John Devlin the original immigrant), and his second eldest son was William James Devlin, after his (William sr's) wife Eleanor James. The son Robert didn't have any kids that I know of, and one of William's brothers gave his second son the middle name of Beatty (again, the grandmother's maiden name). I'd be interested in anything you know about the generation that went to Canada.
