Robert Devlin - Scotland

I have Robert Devlins in my family, although they are not my earliest generation. My earliest Devlin was John Devlin, a Protestant b. in Co. Tyrone (poss. Armagh--very close to the border in any case) in northern Ireland c. 1775.He married Ann Beatty. They had 6 children, including a Robert. When John and his 4 youngest children moved to Canada in 1828 Robert, apparently the eldest son, did not come--story says he was already married and had one child.Later I have found a Robert Devlin, age 60, living with John Devlin Jr, one of the kids who did accompany the parents to Canada, in the 1860 census in the Toronto area.If this is indeed the older brother Robert I don't know what became of his own family or when between 1828 and 1860 he came to Canada. There are several other Roberts among John Devlin Sr.'s grandchildren, so this seems to be a family name. The litmus test is that all the Devlins I have found that I know to be connected to my family are Protestant, most frequently Wesleyan Methodist. This might be good reason to go to Scotland--I imagine that would be a friendlier environment for an Irish Protestant than an Irish Catholic.Your great great(or great? you say his son was your grandfather) grandfather could be a son of my Robert--if your Robert had a son in 1912 he is more likely at least a grandson of my Robert, born c. 1800.E-mail me directly if you have more connections to explore.
