Patrick,
The MARY NEW and EDWARD DEVLIN that you mention in your posting were married in the Parish of Auchinleck, County of Ayrshire, Scotland on the 11th of July, 1879. The marriage certificate indicates that Edward was 23 and Mary was 18 at the time of the wedding. Mr. Sprague was right about the coal mining. Almost all of the Devlin males in my records were miners in the Ayrshire area.
I have not been able to tie your EDWARD DEVLIN into my line of Devlins, but I have seen a New family researcher's records which show another connection via a NEW/DEVLIN marriage. Unfortunately I have not been able to make the jump from Scotland to a specific county in Ireland. Feel free to get in touch off-line if you want.
Sean
