searching for lost ancestor

Can anyone supply ANY information about this person - Banghart DeWitt/Dewitte/Devitt - who died about 1853, probably/maybe in Indiana, may have been a blacksmith/wagonmaker, married the granddaughter of Aquilla Cross - Mariah Taylor December 1, 1834 in Dearborn County, Indiana, fathered 9 children (5 known William George, Martha, Cornelius, Mary Ann, and Sarah Catherine) and seems to have avoided the census takers of the day. There are some who believe he may not have been a DeWitt at all, but really Canadian-born Joseph Banghart Devitt, son of an Irish immigrant and Maria "Polly" Banghart! Have been trying to find out ANYTHING about this person for over 20 years so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!
