Hello Stephen,
This might be of some help to you. Michael is registered as being killed in action on 29/9/1915 and is buried at Vermelles cemetery. He served with the East Surrey Regiment and his regimental number was L/5528. However, I could find no record for a Michael Devitt on the MIC but I did find John Devitt with the same number (L/5528) and regiment. So Michael and John are one and the same man.
In the 1881 census there is a John W Devitt (W.more than likely an error) registered as the son of Thomas F and Jane (Jennie)Devitt. His siblings were Thomas and Caroline.
Hoping this does not lead you in the wrong direction,

Ken
