Thanks for your message. Yes, I did have many cousins in the Bronx, and I've lost track of most of them.
What I remember is this--the JOHN DEVITO family lived on Mayflower Ave.(near Pelham Parkway)in the Bronx.
John, was great Uncle John, my grandfathers brother and my Dad's uncle.He had four sons.
Another JOHN DEVITO was also in the Bronx on Tiebot Ave. but don't remember how many and who in his family.
Another was CARMINE DEVITO living in Astoria Long Island-who had a ice and coal business there(right near the Hells Gate Bridge)he had a family of 9 or more children and there were several sons in that family.That Long Island DeVito was a first cousin of my father.
My estimate is that there may have been some 8 or more male DeVito's in the New York City area at the time when I lived there, between 1922 and 1947.
Very recently there was a DeVito listed in our local daily newspapers obiturary who passed away in nearby Warwick, N.Y. When I read it it mentioned "Carmine and Camella DeVito" as his parents; he was born in Long Island. He was a retired butcher who had moved from the Island to Warwick here in Orange County NY. I wrote the widow telling her what I knew and gave my phone number but I've never heard from her.
That's as much as I can tell you now.
If you were to check the family name source guide published in Italy, you would find that "DeVito", in one of its many spellings, is a very common name in Italy. It predominates in Southern Italy but there are also some in the middle and north Italy. Much to my surprise that name is like "Smith" here in America-which makes it harder to find family connections with.
