Pennsylvania Devines 1700s-1900s > NY
Posted by: Rebecca Date: March 22, 2001 at 12:27:35
  of 1870

Does anyone have any information on these descendants?

Generation No. 1

1. MICHAEL1 DEVINE was born 1752-1769 in NY; and died 1832 in Rush, PA; buried at Devine Ridge Cem. in Devine Ridge, PA. He married POLLY (--?--)

Notes for MICHAEL DEVINE:
*1820 Census Index, I don't see any Devine households for Susquehanna Co. PA. There is a George, James, Mark, and Victor in counties Franklin, Bucks, Philadelphia, Mercer in that order. Lots of Devines in Sullivan, Dutchess, Chautaqua, and Otsego Counties in NY!
*1830 Census Index, there is only one Devine household in Susquehanna Co. PA: John Devine in Rush twp. page 56 of the Susq. Census. Have to check that out at state library; wonder if it's Michael's brother. Also in 1830 lots of Devines spring up in Philly and I'm quite sure that Horace had relatives there (mom said he lived in Philly for a while.)
*1840 Susq. Co.:
George Devine in Rush twp. page 427
Henry Devine in Rush twp. page 427
Hiram Devine in Rush twp. page 427
Samuel Devine in Auburn twp. pg. 299
Thomas Devine in Auburn twp. pg. 294
(Michael deceased,.. must have moved there btw. 1830 and 1832 unless he lived with John Devine in 1830.)

Have to remember to check under DEVIN. Have found this too many times for DeVine.

Children of MICHAEL DEVINE and Polly (--?--) are:
       i.       WILLIAM2 DEVINE, b. Abt. 1790.
ii.       JACOB DEVINE, b. Abt. 1792; d. Unknown.
Notes for JACOB DEVINE: Someone's ancestral file at LDS/FHC has that he was born in Schoharie Co., NY. Wondering if he moved back there when older? 1840 NY Index has a Joacb and a Jacob J. Devine living in the town of Schoharie on page 174. No other listings for that county.

Aunt Belle's scrapbook:
News Clipping (no date): "Mr. and Mrs. Charles Markle of 1_ East street spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Horace DeVine of Johnson City.

"Parents of Daughter" (no date): Mr. and Mrs. Horace Devine of Johnson City are the parents of an eight pound daughter, born Monday at the Johnson City hospital. Mrs. Devine was formerly Miss Mildred Cooke of Maryland.

I believe that Aunt Mildred & Uncle Horace met in Binghamton NY. Places they've lived: town of Maryland, NY, Johnson City, Germantown, Norwich/ or E. Norwich, Utica. Richard went to school in Germantown, probably before Patty was born and they lived in Norwich area when Patty was in her teens. They may have lived in Philly for a little while (?)

Mom sent this clipping to me along with Patty's wedding announcement:
"Horace De Vine"
Horace De Vine, 1510 Sunset Ave., died Feb 7, 1959, at his home.
He was born in La Raysville, Pa., March 26, 1902, son of George and Eva Wilson De Vine. He married Mildred Cook.
They moved to Utica three years ago where he was employed as a tool and diemaker with the General Electric Co.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Tollerton, Utica; Sgt. First Class Richard De Vine, stationed in German; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 Monday from the Gordon Funeral Home, 6 Steuben Park, Burial will be at Maryland, New York, in the spring.
Friends may call this evening 7 to 9 and Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Notes for MILDRED E. COOK:
Belle's scrapbook:
News Clipping, "Co. Home Nurse Quits to Join Army" (no date): Resignation of Mrs. Mildred DeVine, registered nurse at the Otsego County Home for nearly a year, was announced yesterday. Mrs. DeVine has passed the physical examination prior to reporting for duty with the armed forces, it was announced.

Cinthia said that Elsie Plumb was left in charge of Aunt Mildred's estate. That Elsie didn't even contact Patti (Devine) Tollerton's family until a month after Aunt Mildred was dead - I am still not certain where Aunt Mildred lived or where I could find her probated will. Could be Schoharie Co.?
