OBITUARY
WILLIAM DEVINE
WEALTHY REALTY
OWNER IS DEAD
William M. Devine, former city
treasurer, well known dairyman and
one of the wealthiest and most eccen-
tric real estate owners in Chicago, died
yesterday at his home, 4 east Huron
street.
At one time he owned a large part of
Rogers Park, and at the time of his
death still held most all of the property
along Sheridan road between Green-
Leaf and Lunt aveneues. His holdings
are estimated at between $1,000,000 and
$2,000,000.
Mr. Devine was born in County
Cavan, Ireland, Sept. 18, 1844, and
came to Chicago in 1863.
Just before the time of the World’s
Fair, forseeing the march of the city
northward, Mr. Devine obtained large
holdings in Rogers Park and added to
these until he owned practically the
entire district.
Mr. Devine is survived by his widow,
four sons, and four daughters. Fu-
neral services will be held at 10 o’clock
tomorrow morning at the Holy Name
cathedral, of which he was a lay trus-
tee for twenty years. Burial will be at
Calvary.
