There was a John G. Devereux from N.O. who served as a General in the Confederacy. He was married to the daughter of a Mississippi governor, I think. He was the right age to have been born about 1830's. So far as census records go there was only one New Orleans family all of whom appear to have descended from John Devereux. My family descends from Richard Devereux who came from SC/GA in the very early 1800's, so probably we don't connect to John. Happy hunting.
