Hi, Judith!
Am seeking info on the connection between the de VERE name and OSBORNE, or the Dukes of St. Albans, who resided at Newtownanner, 2 miles south of Clonmel, County Tipperary. A gentleman from Newtownanner, in his nineties, obviously a relation of that family, lives quite near me. The OSBORNE mausoleum at Newtownanner cemetery, which I visit occasionally, is the largest I've ever seen.
First Duke of St. Albans was the illegitimate son of Nell Gywnne and Charles 2nd (???). See Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Also interested in the connection between the de VERE name and the HUNT name, which resulted in Sir xxxxx de Vere Hunt, who lived in NEW BIRMINGHAM or GLENGOOLE (the Glen of the Coal) in County Tipperary in the 1800's. He planned to turn the small village of Glengoole into a modern industrail village but didn't get far for some reason. I have a photograph somewhere of his grave in Glengoole, also a photo of a sundial on the wall of the local Catholic church, which said it was engraved by him. He lived in the nearby Shelbourne (or Shelborne) House, which is still extant.
My late wife, Neansaí, spoke occasionally of a Robin de Vere Hunt from County Waterford. In the Church of Ireland (i.e. Protestant) cemetery of Kilrossanty at Briska, Mahon Bridge, County Waterford, there are both de VERE and HUNT names on headstones. I have also seen a de VERE headstone in Stradbally some miles away. Neansaí's maternal grandmother ELIZA HALLEY, about whom she knew nothing, was a HUNT also.I'm going around in circles.
Kindest regards on Christmas Day!Seán. (www.clodaghcreations.pro.iealso www.obrien-photography.com)
