I am a descendant of the Dever(s) from Devers, Texas.

My understanding is that Devers, Texas resulted from my great-grandfather having a mule-changing station at the place where the town exists today - just northwest of Beaumont, TX. The original name of the place was "Dever's Station", obviously named for the business. Mule-changing refers to the idea that on treks west, people needed to "change" (exchange) their mules for new ones at specific points. I have been told that as decendants of my great-grandfather moved away from Dever's Station, half retained the original name of Dever and half changed their name to Devers (with no apostrophe, obviously) in deference to the business.

My grandfather moved to Galveston, TX with the name Dever. He had nine children, with my father being the youngest (Daniel born in 1927). My father subsequently lived in New Orleans and Ocala, FL and passed away in 1997. Only one of the nine children are still alive, that being Teresa Dever James, the second youngest, who now lives near Bay St, Louis, MS.
