Dever Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Kristin,I've been reading these updates for sometime now, check my postings. I thought I'd share with you some of my Dever heritage. My Great Great Grandfather Patrick Dever married a Mary Dougherty from Donegal Ireland. They immigrated to U.S.A some time in the mid 1800's, I'm guessing; and my Great Grandfather was born 11/11/1868 - he lists that date on his naturalization papers for Australian Citizenship. His name was Daniel Joseph Dever, born in Philadelphia, went to the Manayunk Parish School for his elementary education. My Great Uncle John James Dever - 83years old and still with us, tells me Daniel was one of 5 siblings, mentioned a brother James and that Great Grandfather's parents died when he was young and that he was brought up by an Aunt who was a Mother Superior of a Convent in Philadelphia, Pennysilvania area. He was a Seaman and immigrated to Australia on the S.S. Sierra in 1901, he continued his trips to the States until about 1906 .He married my Great Grandmother in 1901, who was living with her family in Sydney Australia. They had immigrated from Scotland when she was 10years to Melbourne and then Sydney. Her family was Scottish Presbyterian, he wrote home to say he was getting married and his Catholic family cut him off, so he lost contact with all of his family in Philadelphia. There are still heaps of Dever's in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. I'm sure some of them would be related to us. Such a shame we lost contact! My husband & I visited Philadelphia in 1995, travelled through the Shanandoeh Valley, Washington and other places. Went to the church we think my Great -G, may have attended and visited the town of Manayunk - most interesting. Good luck with your family history search- Best Regards Jenny Szabo - E-mail s175264@student.uq.edu.au
