If you can supply some dates, to your forebearers, that helps other researchers. John is a very common Dever name, and several different family Devers groups in the Iowa/Illinois area used this name.
Do you have any counties to narrow your search? My Dever family was located (1868) in the Hamilton Co, Il/Lee Co, IA area, till they moved in 1898 to the Fayette/Shelby co, Il area. However, there were other Dever family groups in the same areas, ie Adams Co, IL, etc. Have you tried to find your grandfather on the US census for 1930's? It may give you sisters, brothers, perhaps parents. Good hunting, and don't despair. The quest for family is the most rewarding detective work there is.
