Hi !
My name is David De Vere. My father has done much research on his direct ancestor, Edward "Old Neddie" Dever. Neddie was born in County Donegal, Ireland about 1775, and married there Unity ---?---.
The family immigrated with their son William, and other children, to the United States around 1811. We believe that they arrived at New London, Connecticut, in 1811. By 1821, they were living at Bairdstown (Now Blairsville), Pennsylvania.
Neddie had several daughters, insluding Mary, Isabel, Unity, Catherine, Cecelia. His two sons were John (called Owen), and William (my ancestor).
We do not know what became of Owen, he left for Iowa or "the West" at a young age, and there is no trace of him after that.
William Dever married Cecelia McGlaughlin, whose Uncle William was from the Dublin area of Ireland.
They had two sons, Dennis and Edward. Edward married Mary Richert or Richards. Their son, Edward William Devers, was my Great Grandfather.
We have a Martha Dever or Devers acting as a Godmother in William's baptism in Pennsylvania. She may be a relative of Neddie's. Perhaps his mother, or aunt.
We have been completely unable to trace Neddie's parentage in Ireland. He was illiterate, due to the harsh treatment of Catholics in the opportunities for education. My father found a Spinning Wheel register, which is a count of families doing cottage industry at the later 1700's in Donegal. Several Dever families are listed, but there is no way to know which one is a likely match.
Does anyone know some information that might tie us to Donegal ? I am extremely pleased to find this forum, and will monitor it. E mail me if you think you can help.
