agents of imagration would be fired or suspended for changing names. It just didnt happen. what did happen is most irish who emigrated didnt know how to spell. So thus had no idea how it was spelled
As such when they came in contact with govt papers they usualy did it wrong adding to the yankee percepttion that the irish were stupid ,it was rather the british law which mandated it
also if they came thru canada they needed to change from the patrick bar joseph naming patern to using the middle name. so patrick joseph was joseph patrick adding to confusion
as to deever how one gets that from divir is beyond me. My mothers name sounds like never.now if you do the british pronounciatin of lever to leaver that makes since but dever is never britsh pronounciation to me.
