A number of years ago I read the article mentioned. There is no evidence that Michel DeVaux (sic, see 1698 census of Beaubassin) came from Martaize nor, did Arsenault (who had his share of errors in both his works) say so on the page mentioned. I contacted the author and he agreed that B.A. had not said this and further that he could not remember from what source he came up with that village. The dit name Dauphine, which is associated with Michel DeVaux, suggests he was a soldier and came from the old province of that name; a better speculation than Martaize. We shall likely never know, for there is no extant marriage record for our progenitor and his wife Marie-Magdeleine Martin. Augustin's brother Joseph is the progenitor of the family in the Isle Madame area and thus also that of the family (after 1848) at Little Bras d'Or,C.B.
