While the spelling is different (DeVaux, Deveau, Devoe)among Acadians the name is the same. All spellings were lumped together (and should continue to be) because no distinction based on spelling alone separates the descendants of Michel DeVaux of Beaubassin, from whom we all descend. A given spelling may dominate in an area, but never use the spelling as a sole indicator of from which branch you descend. Today in Cape Breton no fewer than a dozen spellings are extant. And yes, see "Devoe" but also see the original spelling "DeVaux. In my experience the first "DeVoe" (among Acadians) spelling was in 1786 on Isle Madame when two of my ancestors (and others) signed a petition to the governor. It would help when searching the name to initially identify the ancestor as Huguenot, Quebecois or Acadian, the three primary (by birth) origins of the name. John
