Hi, Deena--Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. Here is what I'm thinking now, though it is mostly speculation.

Lemuel DeVault had a second wife, Mary Smith McClure. They had several children: William Wallace, Lemuel L., Margaret, Edwin, George, and James.

The oldest son, William Wallace, was born in 1827. At age 13 on 10 Dec. 1840 he was married to Cynthia Clark. My gg grandfather Strauder was born in 1841 or 1842. In the 1850 census, a Wallace W. Devolt, age 24, was living in a household that included Olive Lynn, age 32, born about 1818. William Wallace would have had a half sister, Olive, from Lemuel's first marriage to Nancy. William Wallace DeVault died in 1859 at age 32. I think he might be Strauder's father, especially since Lemuel, William Wallace, and Strauder all lived in the Tippecanoe, Indiana area. I hope I will be able to verify all of this, but I think I might be onto something.
