Mysteries of the 1762 DeVault German Bible My DeVault line goes back to Jacob DeVault (b. Oct. 14, 1759) and his wife Mary Michael (b. Oct 1758) who moved to the Monongalia County region of what is now West Virginia in 1793. The front of this old German Bible I posses it contains writing in English mentioning the birth of their son (Abraham DeVault b. April 14, 1791) and their daughter (Pheby DeVault b. Oct 1797). The back of the Bible has writings in German that mention Abrahams birth date again, along with mentions of (skethy translations came up with this - I'm sure some mistakes - except with Abrahams information); Daniel b. March 1, 1789 Nathan? b. Abraham b. April 14, 1791 Isaak? b. Jan. 19, 1793 Maria Catharina? b. 1795 d. March 12, 1797 Early accounts in Monongalia County do show a Daniel DeVault around 1800-1820 in that area. Also be wary of variations of this name - Jacob DeVault is listed as Jacob Tewalt in the 1810 Monongalia County Virginia Census! Until I acquired this Bible I had never seen anything mentioning Jacob having children other than Abraham and Pheby. It’s also a mystery where they lived prior to the move in 1793. Some say they came via Pennsylvania, belonged to the Henry Dewald line somehow (maybe a brother of Henry’s was Jacobs father?). Old family history writings point to Jacob moving to this area in 1793 from “the old dominion” of Virginia (basically any part of Virginia that isn’t West Virginia today).
