I think it's pretty likely that you're right about the DeVane connection. Thomas Devane (also spelled DeVaughn in one document I know of) was the first DeVane in the New Hanover/Black River area of North Carolina. Got there in the 1730's from Bath County, NC. No idea where he came from before that (one of the many mysteries I am working on). His children - with wife Margaret - were Thomas, John, Mary and Margaret. Thomas and John's descendants are probably very well documented because both served in the Revolutionary War (as well as their sons) and people have joined the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution off them. Perhaps work from them and see if you bump into the ancestor you're referring to and a generation where the name spelling changes. Seen that happen a lot in my research.
