I too always heard the name was of French origin and it may be.The French spelling is different, however. I suspect that they actually came from the UK with origins in France.Early names are new testament bibilical (Thomas, Samuel, Peter, and John). Records show these DeVaughn's as far back as the American Revolutionary War. The story I always heard was that the DeVaughn's were three brothers who came to America from France and were distillers. This story goes back generations in my family.I suspect some truth in the story since slaves associated with the masters history and took it as their own.Especially in cases where there was a blood relationship such as in my family.
There were slave owners in Maryland.(Paten DeVaughn from Prince Georges County in 1860)Others include:
Alfred DeVaughn of Warren County, VA in 1850; James H. DeVaughn of Alexandria County, VA in 1850; and Samuel H. DeVaughn of Alexandria County in 1860.These families are related and descended from the group in NC.
